Mendeley 06a – How to use Mendeley for referencing (Apple)

The basic reason why I want to use this technology, is to cite references in text and to create bibliographies using the correct style. These steps can be followed for this purpose. Since the process differs in the case of MAc and Windows operated systems, I will provide steps for both these operating systems.

Did you install the MS word plug-in? If not, see the Get started post

1)  To choose the reference style (you can change it any time)

  • Open the MS Word document
  • Click in Add-ins (top menu)
  • Click on Choose referencing style

  • Your desktop application of Mendeley will open
  • A pop-up will open as well
  • Choose the referencing style you want to use (I have chosen Harvard)

  • Click on Done

2)  To cite author and date in brackets (e.g. Moreno 1934)

  • Place cursor in your document where you want to cite a reference

  • Click in Top menu on Add-ins

  • Click on Insert of Edit a Citation
  • A pop-up screen will pop up to allow you to find the reference in your Mendeley library

  • Type the name of the author, the title of the reference or the date in the provided space to search the reference
  • If the reference was found, it will be shown as follows

  • Click on the reference
  • Click on OK
  • It will be cited in your text as follows

3)  To insert a page number of the reference (e.g. Moreno 1934, p 10)

  • If you need only the date in brackets, highlight the reference in the text
  • Click on Add-ins and choose insert or edit a reference

  • Click on the name of the author
  • The pop-up window will open to show more fields
  • Add the page number

  • And it will be cited with the page number in your text

4)  Need only the date in the text?

  • Insert the reference ( see step a)
  • Click on the reference to be able to edit it

  • Click on Add-ins
  • Click on Insert or edit a citation
  • Click on the name of the author
  • Click on suppress author
  • Add page number if needed

5)  To create the list of reference (Bibliography)

  • Put the cursor where you want to insert the bibliography (list of references)
  • Click on Add-Ins
  • Click on Insert Bibliography

  • Bibliography will appear in the style you have chosen

  • The list of references updates automatically as you type, but you can also refresh it
  • Click on Add-ins
  • Click on Refresh
  • New references added will appear in the bibliography

6)  To change the reference style

You can follow step 1 any time to change the reference style. It will be changed immediately to reflect the new style in text as well as in the list of references.
